Description: The St. Peter's Catholic Church, built circa 1846, was destroyed by fire in 1947. St. Peter’s was relocated in 1949 to its current location on Church Street. Before the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1826, there were few Catholics living in Chillicothe. Afterwards, many Irish immigrants came to the area, bringing Catholicism with them joined by German Catholics about 20 years later. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1930-1943, this photograph shows a Catholic boys choir singing in an unidentified church in Ohio. There are several members of the group surrounding an adult choir leader playing the piano or organ. This is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Description: St. John Catholic Church is located at 777 South Main Street in Lima, Ohio. The church began in 1899 when the Bishop gave permission for a parish in South Lima. Land was purchased for $6,200 and a school building was erected on the property in 1901 with Mass being held on the third floor of the building. By 1912, property adjoining the school had been purchased and a the basement for the new church was built. The parishioners worshiped there, in the basement, for 12 years before the church was completed in 1924. This red brick church has two symmetrical towers and a portico supported by 6 Corinthian columns. Above the portico stands a statue, presumably of St. John. Renovations on the church were completed in 1971 and 1990. A new school was built in 1958 (and closed in 1973), and the original demolished in 1959. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The photograph shows the front of Saint Raphael Church with several automobiles parked out front. The church has two large bell towers, with one being significantly taller than the other. Saint Raphael Church is located at 225 East High Street, at the corner of Spring Street, in Springfield. Designed by architect Charles A. Cregar, construction on this Gothic style brick building began in 1848. Construction on a very large addition began in 1892, and was officially completed with the dedication in 1898. This historic Roman Catholic church has a 184 foot tower, and a somewhat smaller one holding a 16, 000 pound bell. The stained glass windows, created by Mayer of Munich, were designed in the twelfth-century manner. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. View on Ohio Memory.
